Discovery in October 2018
During the summer, we asked Lela Ninoshvili to investigate the lower layers of wallpaper in the house. She made a remarkable discovery—just as she had in other Tbilisi homes. Beneath two layers of wallpaper, an entire room was revealed, adorned with hand-painted walls. It is fascinating to imagine how many houses in Georgia may be hiding similar treasures beneath modern wallpaper.
Consultants’ Visit, July 2018
Restoration work began at the National Trust of Georgia’s headquarters. In July 2018, we welcomed two expert consultants: architect Donald Hankey, former chair of ICOMOS UK, and structural engineer Kevin Hallaway. They spent ten days with us, conducting intensive investigative work. Future plans for the building were also developed during their visit.
Restoration Begins, 2019
The restoration plans for the building were approved by the Tbilisi City Hall. Restoration work officially commenced.
Opening in 2022
The official opening of our restored headquarters took place on December 9, 2021. The event was attended by the President of Georgia, the British Ambassador to Georgia, and representatives of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Part of the building is now dedicated to ICOMOS Georgia, whose team led the restoration process. ICOMOS Georgia will become a central information hub for heritage preservation issues in the country.
